The UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women has been marked in Pakistan as in other countries. Candles have been lit, slogans raised, rallies held. But despite this, the issue of violence directed against women remains a rather insidious one. Even though there have been findings by international bodies that suggest up to 80 per cent of women in Pakistan suffer violence in some form, the matter is consistently trivialized. There are those who argue that matters in the home should not figure in the public sphere. There are those who lament the rising rate of divorce and fail to acknowledge the number of women locked in dangerous situations due to the taboos and legal constraints that hold them back, preventing them from escape.

Indeed. (It hasn't receved much attention on Newsvine, either :-(
I am so grateful to live in a country where I am valued and respected. It is so awful what women in other countries have to suffer. I cannot imagine someone throwing acid on me. That is too horrible to imagine. I hope this issue is brought to the forefront and the laws in Pakistan are changed to protect women. There are evil people on this earth and one day they will have to face God and explain themselves. They don't seem to think about that.
The government must do more and we need more awareness about the many immoralities inherent in the widespread abuse women face, so that women – and men – everywhere can join the struggle for true emancipation.
Aren't there international women's groups who bring this outrage to the public eye? Whatever happened to Amnesty International and groups such as RAWA in Afghanistan? Why is there no opinion from the White House?

Why don't you get off your arse and do something if you're indeed so VERY Concerned???
I was offered free sessions of counseling from the local women's shelter when I left my physically abusive husband. I had a new baby. They didn't have room for me in the shelter. The counseling was first class, but I remember I cried when they told me I couldn't come back after the third session, they just don't have the resources and so many are in need. Perhaps you could start there unless you're just another Newsvine Hypocrite Carper.

What do you know of me, Nan? I was wondering if the groups to which I referred had been dismantled. I contributed to RAWA. Do you know who they are? I wonder if such groups still exist as I lost track. I was also a Rape Counselor, and I do know about lack of funds. I worked for my state for 28 years. Yes, I am quite familiar with women's rights, abuse, lack of funding, etc.
If you had known me, you would know that I am a vigorous women's rights advocate. I deplore violence against women, and I CANNOT understand why, since this violence is so widespread and particularly in Islamic countries, that the White House has voiced no opinions. What does MO do? Does she condone this violence? All I ever hear out of her mouth are how she is ashamed of the US and thinks all whites are racist.
These countries have been doing this for decades, and yet they continue. Why? I know Bill and Hillary gave it a feeble hearted attempt, and it was brought to the forefront more so after 9-11, and yet there is no widespread condemnation from our gov't at all. I have to keep on asking why??? Don't you?
The attitude towards violence agaisnt women and girls needs to change.
